A Successful Songwriting Spree

February Album Writing Month (FAWM) 2017

This year’s FAWM campaign was hugely successful -resulting in a total of 16 songs (the goal is to write 14 songs in 28 days). It was probably my best ever FAWM in terms of the quality of songs cranked out in less than 4 weeks (I posted my first song on Feb 4th) and also in terms of the kind of feedback I have received on the songs I wrote this time. There was a very large amount of excellent songs by so many FAWMers this year too. Well there is every year, but it seemed to me to be at least as impressive as 2016, which I thought would be a very tough one to beat.

So for me, the last 2 FAWM campaigns have seen a significant step up in overall quality in my songwriting as far as I can see. The most impressive being that I am able to write in more genres of music than I thought and that my music is actually pretty commercial-sounding.

I came to terms with the fact that I actually write pop songs some time ago rather than “cool” or “interesting” songs, but if I’m going keep writing full-time and have my songwriting provide some sustenance then I guess commercial is the way to go right?

So in summary I wrote songs spanning the following genres:

  • Disco
  • Rock (classic and contemporary)
  • Funk
  • Soul
  • Reggae/Ska
  • Pop
  • Gospel
  • Alt Country
  • Electronica

The next step is to make sure I can play these new songs live, along with a hat full of others that I consider keepers from years past and get to playing them with a band. At the same time I’m reaching out much more this year and pitching these songs for commercial use and whatever other doors that they may be able to open for me.

I may even set aside some time for 50/90 2017 now!
